Long Leaves
(I haven’t shot any Photosynthesis in over 6 months, and while there are a few things I’d still like to try out, I think I’m getting towards the end of that particular journey. I was reviewing my favourite photos from that series, and thought it would be interesting to revive this blog with some commentary about the ones that mean the most to me.)
Long-Leaves (initially called Daniel Long-Leaves) is the foundational image. There were attempts before, but this was the one that made me think I was on to something. A lot change in the process after this first image, and there’s a fair bit of editing to delete the folds in the white sheet I used as a background. It was shot in full sunlight, hence the harsh light, using Ilford Pan F, which I swapped for FP4+ soon after. Still, the way the long pointy leaves imprinted themselves in the shadows and not in the light, the graphic nature of the result, this is the image that made me want to push forward and experiment with what became the Photosynthesis project.
