Hommage à Gustave

I remember this bitterly cold summer day in December in Napier, New Zealand. I’d gone out to take some photos of the art deco town but it was just too cold for comfort. As I walked along the beach on my way back to the hotel I spotted this ship on the horizon, and the scene immediately made me think of Gustave le Gray’s Vapeur. I gave the image a slight toning to recall his calotype prints.
